The Beauty For Real website boasts the formula is “loaded with plant-derived antioxidants like green tea and grape seed extracts that deliver regenerative elements and anti-aging capabilities.” Sounds like a great thing, however the skeptic in me wonders how much this is a marketing ploy. Still, I have no complaints about the product. I love that it doesn’t feel tacky or greasy and the marine collagen combined with mint and grapefruit definitely plumps the lips. It also has a slight tingle, which is fun. (If you like that sort of thing.)

My twenty something vote is yes on this antioxidant lip gloss. It may be a little flashy, but I appreciate the product behind all the glitz and glamour.

I’m not normally one to brag, but last night I pulled off a great dinner party with one of my husband’s friends and his new girlfriend. We’re talking mood music, candles, artistic appetizers, good food, decent wine and dessert. As a newlywed twenty-something, I’m still finding my bearings with the whole hosting thing, but so far it’s been a lot of fun opening up our home to friends and family.

I’ll admit, I did freak out a little when I found out the girlfriend is gluten intolerant since I have exactly zero experience cooking gluten free. Not to mention, I felt like I had something to prove since we were meeting for the first time and I didn’t want to kill her by accidentally including the wrong ingredient in something. (My husband doesn’t understand this but I know all you ladies do.)

Like any other inexperienced cook, I ran straight to the internet to get an idea of an appropriate menu and found www.gfreefoodie.com to be an excellent resource. In the end I decided to go with caprese to start, followed by steak, mashed potatoes and corn–much to my surprise a totally normal meal. Who knew gluten intolerant people could eat that? Shout out to my grill-master husband. You did good last night.

I hit up Trader Joe’s to find a g-free dessert and came away with a delectable mango sorbet, which I topped with fresh nectarine slices. To. Die. For. After dessert, I whipped out some Good Earth Sweet and Spicy Tea which boasts of antioxidants.

Hostess with the mostess? Hardly, but I’d like to be there some day. I guess since we’re having friends over again tonight I’m getting my fair share of practice. Luckily there are no special food needs to accommodate so I am a free bird in the kitchen. Whew!

Twenty-something goes hunting for bargains and discovers the secret of the local Farmer's Market.

I never thought I would be one to shop at a local fruit stand, but I recently starting frequenting one which is just a short drive from my house. Even though it’s hard to pull into the lot, parking is tight, and it’s cash/check only, I’m hooked! I don’t even mind that it’s an extra stop when I’m stocking up on groceries for the week. (Surprising.) How did I not discover this secret sooner?

Now you might be asking yourself, “Why is she so excited about this?” Well first of all, the fruit/veggies are noticeably cheaper. A hard-core bargain hunter, I’m practically in heaven when I’m there because I feel like everything is on sale! I’ve also found there is more variety and it’s easier to pick out ripe produce. At the grocery store lately I haven’t been able to find a peach or pear that is ready to eat to save my life. Not to mention, everything is a lot more expensive.

To recap, I’m buying more produce, saving money, packing healthier lunches, cooking better dinners, and feeling more confident about my overall twenty-something diet. Win, win, win, win, and win!

So thank you local corner fruit stand. My business is all yours. You have truly made my month.

This morning I had my annual (dreaded) womanly physical with all the bells and whistles. Always a good time. Who doesn’t love being questioned, weighed, poked and prodded at for 45 minutes? While my appointment was the usual unpleasant/uncomfortable experience, I did walk out with some well heeded advice from my doctor regarding vitamins/supplements.

It’s common knowledge Seattle is lacking in the sun department, but I didn’t know that to make up for this I should be taking 1,000 mg of Vitamin D daily. This should be on top of the multi-vitamin that I am not currently taking because it’s hiding in the back of my medicine cabinet. But wait–there’s more! I was also advised to add more fiber and calcium to my daily regimen. I think it will be hard to try to incorporate fiber into my cooking right now, so I’m going to take a supplement instead. The calcium I think I can manage.

Hmmm…a lot more capsules going down the hatch. Does this mean I need a plastic pill sorter now? I’ve always hated those things.

♥ The secret to a long life is living one day at a time.

♥ JFK was mostly loved for his good looks.

♥ Children and driving a nice car are signs of a good life. (Car being a ’97 Ford Taurus.)

♥ When at parties with copious amounts of food, steer clear of the cookie table. Veggies and dip are a better substitute.

♥	I should take more videos.

♥	$7.00 will buy you a nice 100th birthday card, and even though it’s overpriced, you should buy it anyway because you may never have a chance to do it again.

This milestone is definitely something to celebrate!

My husband’s great-grandmother is about to turn 100. The events have been planned, guests invited, shirts with her face printed on them–all in honor of a lady who (I’ll bet) would much rather stay home with the company of Judge Judy and Wheel of Fortune than celebrate her old age.

One. Hundred. Years. Old. Wow.

To be honest, I’m not sure if I want to know what living inside of a century-old body feels like. Let alone be there some day myself. What has this woman been eating all of her life? Is there a secret to aging gracefully she needs to spill?

We constantly see ads for serums, creams, pills and powders that claim to slow the effects of time. Every other day someone comes out with a new fad diet that is supposed to give us all perfect bodies. Eat this. Not that. Drink diet soda because it’s better for you. Don’t drink diet soda because artificial sweeteners will kill you.

All I hope for is to be as healthy as humanly possible and have my husband next to me for the long haul. If that means ripening to the age of 100, so be it.

As for the present, I’ll be sporting a red shirt with great-grandma’s mug smack in the center and will hopefully discover the key to living to be 100 years young. Happy birthday to a wonderfully wise woman. You are loved by many.

Feeding a family is quite the task. And I’m only responsible for two people right now! How do you view healthy cooking?

Most of the time, the task of meal planning seems insurmountable in my young, inexperienced, newly married hands. I want to be that confident-in-the-kitchen wife, but it’s a daunting task to stick to a regimen of healthy eating. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy to have this role, but my husband and I have such little spare time in our lives right now that grocery shopping and cooking honestly feel like chores.

On the flip side, eating out is a heck of a lot easier but never has a great outcome for one reason or another. (Bad for the budget or bad for the body. Take your pick.) This weekend for instance, after a full day of errands and spending time downtown, my husband and I stopped at a restaurant to eat before going to a movie. We had a gift card to cover the bill so spending money wasn’t an issue, but thanks to the nutritional menu provided, we were well aware that even a sandwich and salad didn’t score too well on the healthy food scale. On Sunday we ate out again with the family and I over-indulged…which resulted in me being sick to my stomach for the rest of the night.

In sum, a lemon drop cocktail + wine + appetizers + salad + soup was just way to much food and drinks for my system. Bleh.

I’ve talked about the challenges of balancing a healthy diet in the past, but clearly didn’t follow my own advice of moderation. This leaves me with a renewed desire to spend some quality time in the kitchen this week cooking with fresh ingredients. Ultimately I want to feel good not guilty after eating.

The fact is a healthy, home-cooked meal isn’t going to just magically show up on the table and the fridge won’t stock itself. So instead of complaining and eating crap, I’m going to make a trip to the dreaded grocery store (no offense, Trader Joe’s and Safeway), spend some time searching for antioxidant-rich, high-fiber and high-protein recipes, roll up my sleeves, and COOK.

And I’m going to like it. Damn it!

Taking supplements may be helpful, but are sometimes expensive. Fortunately, this vitamin is free... if only the sun would come out!

This past weekend, we had unusually warm, sunny, Seattle weather in the middle of February. IT WAS FANTASTIC! A lovely reminder that spring is just around the corner, and just what I needed in the midst of rainy after rainy day in the Emerald City. Cherry trees are starting to bloom and things are looking green again. I love it!

With the coming of spring, I feel a renewed resolve to start running outdoors coming on. The last time my husband dragged me on a run I only lasted five minutes because my legs started tingling and itching uncontrollably. (I’ll blame it on the cold January weather-not being out of shape.) By the way, WHY does this happen?

Back to sunshine, I think I speak for many when I say a healthy dose does the body good. I’m ready for some Vitamin D on a regular basis. Give it another month or so and the good days should stick around for longer than just the weekend.
I’ve mentioned before that I enjoy cardio and strength training. In Power Vinyasa I feel a lot more challenged and sore in good places the next day. In my book, this marks a good workout. I now know and understand the difference between Hot Yoga and this more core focused practice. And I like it.

After three weeks my legs feel stronger, look more toned and I swear I’m seeing a difference in my core. My sister, who has never had a bicep to speak of in her life, now has clear muscle definition. Hmm…maybe hot yoga lives up to the hype and sweat after all.

Now I just need to find another studio and introductory special.

How to manage your diet on vacation? I say it's a balancing act.

This past Valentines weekend my lovely husband (who is still going strong on the grapefruit) planned a surprise trip for us up to Vancouver, BC, for a night. We got to walk around the Olympic Village and take in all the action of the bustling city. Good work on his part.

Being newly-married, twenty-somethings on a budget, we always struggle when it comes to eating out on vacation. Let’s face it. Cheap food is always the crappy junk food and on the flip side, even going to a nice restaurant doesn’t always turn out to be the healthiest option. Who wants to order a salad instead of lobster or steak when you’re out on the town? Chances are the salad’s going to be overpriced anyway…

What I’ve come to realize is, it’s all about choices. Sure, it’s good to make an effort to eat well even when you’re on vacation, but that shouldn’t come at the price of taking away from the experience. So in our case we packed sandwiches and fruit for the road. For dinner we opted for Subway. (Partly because the wait for any decent restaurant was insane, partly because we knew it would be cheaper, and partly because it was a healthier option.) Triple threat.

After dinner we treated ourselves to a hot nutella crepe (AMAZING) from a street vendor. This splurge was well worth the money and calories since we had been cautious all day. We were seriously tempted to go back for a second one but resisted the urge.

Bottom line, being health conscious doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a dose of chocolate now and then. It’s all about choices.
